The castle which is open to visitors in July and August was probably erected as a Norman stronghold about 1210. Between1350 and 1640 it was occupied by the MacEgans, a famous Brehon family who kept a renowned school of law and letters. The Castle which has been recently restored is situated near the village of Lorrha, just off the Birr to Portumna road and is near the River Shannon. Open daily from 2 to 6 p.m. July and August. The Museum is located in two stone Georgian Buildings, built in 1840-2 as the Governor’s House and gatehouse of Gaol for North Tipperary. Exhibitions for 2008 include: Gaol model, School room, Shop, Museum of Rural Life, Dairy & Kitchen and the Gallery which houses visiting art exhibitions.

The North Tipperary Genealogy Centre provides a genealogical service for people whose ancestors originated in North Tipperary. Research is conducted on a fee basis.
